Lancaster vs Jamestown

Lancaster will be facing the Jamestown Red & Green on Friday night at Foyle-Kling Field. The Red & Green comes into the game with a 2-3 overall record and 1-2 in Class AA. Lancaster is 2-1 and 3-2 overall and both will want to get a W to keep up with Bennett and OP.

Jamestown has an overall lead in the head to head matchup that started in 1975, 30-22. Since 2000, Lancaster is 16-8 in the games played between the two schools including 4 playoff games and 1 Bowl game.

Last Time Out

The Legends would kickoff to the Tigers to begin the game with a drive start at the Bennett 34 yard line. 3 plays later they would be forced to punt the ball to the home team, drive start Lancaster 42 yard line.

The Legends would quickly face a 4 and short after a measurement by the officials. The teams lined up on 4th down and the defense for Bennett jumped offsides, 1st and 10 Lancaster. The Legends would try to keep the momentum going but were held by the Tigers defense who forced them to punt.

The Tigers would get the ball rolling on the ground and get to the Lancaster 29 yard line. A few plays later the offense would have penalties which pushed the ball to 45. Bennett would attempt a few passes to get the ball down the field again but they would hit the ground causing a turnover on downs, ball back to the Legends at their own 35 yard line, 4:56 left in the 1st Q.

This drive the offense for Lancaster started to create holes and time for the QB. Short passes and runs moved the ball over the 50 yard line. On a 3rd and 8 from the Bennett 37, the defense jumped offsides again giving Lancaster a much shorter distance to gain a 1st down, which they did. A run brought the ball to the 8 yard line, 1st and goal. 1st down was a run that picked up a yard, 2nd was a pass that fell incomplete at the 3 yard line. 3rd down another pass hit the ground in the back of the endzone. It would come down to a 4th down play that connected right by the South end zone goal post, WR wide open. Lancaster up 7-0 after the PAT.

The squads would both have a chance with the ball but on Lancasters possession, an interception would turn the ball over to the Tigers. Bennett came up and after a false start penalty, threw an interception and gave the ball back to Lancaster at their own 44 yard line, 1st and 10. It quickly became 1st and 5 after the Tigers had too many men on the play called against them.

On 2nd and 5, it looked like the Legends offense had hit on a big play but a holding penalty brought the ball back, 2nd and 11. The drive stalled and it looked like a punt was next but Lancaster attempted a fake with a pass down the middle of the field. The ball would go over the WR's head, 1st and 10 Bennett at the Lancaster 45.

The Tigers moved to the 33 and attempted a pass that was caught at the 13 and ran into the endzone. Back at the line of scrimmage, a false start call was made, bringing it back 3rd and 14 from the 38. The Tigers would not be deterred and threw another pass down the field and was caught and carried into the endzone, 7-6 Lancaster up after a failed 2 point try.

Lancaster started the next drive at their own 25 and after a penalty faced a 3rd and 8. A nice pitch and catch picked up the 1st down and would see the ball at midfield. Looking at another 3rd and long, the Lancaster QB went back for a pass and hit his WR for a 30 yard pick up, ball at the Bennett 21 with 1:51 left in the half.

The Legends inched the ball closer to the goal line until they brought out the field goal unit to attempt a kick. The ball would be bobbled and after a knee by Bennett, the teams went to the half.

Lancaster would receive the ball to start the 2nd half and they did not waste time, a run up the middle was brought back for a house call, Legends up 13-6.

The ball was kicked to Bennett and they would get a score and a 2 point conversion, 14-13 Tigers.

Lancaster may have been down but were not out of this one. The offense got on the field and again moved the ball down the field inside the redzone. On a 3rd and 5 from the 7, screenplay hit and the ball carried into the end zone. Celebration was short as there was a flag down on the play. An illegal shift was called and brought the TD and the ball back. On 4th down the Legends attempted a pass that connected but was far short of the goal line and a turnover on downs, 2:54 left in the 3rd.

Bennett would drive the ball into the Lancaster end but were stopped by the penalties and the Legends defense. They would punt the ball back with Lancaster having the ball at their own 3 yard line.

On the first play of that drive, an angry run by the Legends RB carried the ball to the 22, getting them out from the shadow of the goal post. The next play, another strong run for another 15 yards and Lancaster was now at the 37 instead of the 3. The drive continued until a pass that was caught at midfield was fumbled and picked up by Bennett. Bennett would drive and score on that possession, 20-13, 2 point try no good.

With 5:48 left in the game, Lancaster would get the ball at their 16 yard line, 1st and 10. They were able to pick up a first down and get near midfield but had to turn the ball over on downs, Bennett ball 3:12 left. Both squads would use timeouts to stop the clock and regroup to go over what they wanted. The Tigers would get into a 4th and 11 at the Legends 25. They ran a play to the right side but were run out of bounds, ball back to Lancaster, 1:53 left, 1st and 10 at the 20 yard line.

A pass across the middle was caught and brought to the 28 on the 1st play of the drive. The 2nd was another pass caught down the seam, 1st and 10 at the 50 yard line. After an incomplete pass, another pass across the middle for 11 yards and a 1st down, 1:05 left. The hurry up offense was in full effect. A 5 yard stop route was caught and ran to the Bennett 30. An interception was dropped by a Bennett DB, Lancaster still with the ball. Next play, a short pass across the middle, 25 yard line, 41 seconds left. Bennett jumped offsides, 3rd and 2 from the 20.

The next play did not go the Legends way and Bennett was able to run out the clock and hang onto the victory.
