Buffalo News: Lancaster/Depew Football Game
Legends vs Wildcats
This Friday Night the Lancaster Legends will welcome to Foyle-Kling Field the Depew Wildcats for the renewal of a rivalry that began in 1919. This will be the 93rd meeting between the 2 schools. The schools did not play in the Fall II 2020 season as only conference games were played in the shortened season. It was the first year the schools did not play each other since 1940.
The schools come into the game both at 6-1 on the year and looking to end the regular season with a win over their long time foe.
Last week both the Legends and Wildcats were in action against conference competitors.
Depew vs Eden/North Collins
The Wildcats would face the Eden/North Collins Raiders at the Frank Constantino Sports Complex on Thursday night. Depew would pull out a victory and earn themselves the Class C Central Championship this year.
The Raiders would get the ball first and move the ball to midfield before being forced to punt. They would chew up almost half the 1st Q on that possession.
The Wildcat's first time with the ball started at the 15 yard line. Depew would also move the ball to midfield but go for a 4th and long and pick up the 1st down. Later on the drive from the Eden/North Collins 33 yard line, the Wildcats threw a pass down field and a tipped ball landed in the arms of a Depew player who would run in the endzone for a TD.
The very next drive, the Raiders moved the ball down the field and answered that TD with one of their own, score 7-7.
Watch the Depew-Eden/North Collins football game.
Depew has been relying on the run game this year with Carson Alberti carrying the ball for the team with 1,195 yards on 145 carries. He is averaging 8.2 yards per rush and has 21 TD's on the season so far.
BIG Shout out to Carson Alberti who had record shattering night!

287yds, 5 TD's, 21 TD's on the season...ALL SCHOOL RECORDS! Fastest to 1,000yds (1,195 in 7 games)!@WNYAthletics @wolf3328 @WNYTomPrince @bufnewspreptalk @miggyrod33 @MrSection6 @BeeNewsGLindahl @JasonNado_Bee pic.twitter.com/DCI4AGpcjc
Depew will not rely completely on the running game, the passing game is a threat to the opponents also. The Wildcats lead Class C Central division with 600 passing yards through 7 games.
Lancaster vs Clarence
Lancaster played one game over 2 days last week. It started on Friday night when the Legends would receive the kickoff and move the ball down the field to score.
Clarence would also score to tie it up at 7 later in the 1st Quarter. The Legends would not be out done and score in the 2nd Q when a short pass led to a long run deep inside the Red Devils end. They would cross the goal line and go up 14-7.
Clarence would get the ball later and be forced to punt but Lancaster blocked it and brought it back inside the Clarence 10 yard line. A strong Red Devil defense would stop the visiting team from getting in the endzone and forced them to kick a FG, halftime Legends up 17-7. A really long halftime.
During halftime lighting was spotted and the game was delayed until it was postponed until 6pm Saturday night.
The squads would show back up on Saturday night and finish the 2nd half. Clarence would start with the ball and move down the field to score bringing the game to 17-14.
Lancaster would get that TD back in the 3rd on a run up the middle, 24-14 Legends up.
Clarence would move the ball deep into Legends territory but would have to settle for a FG themselves, 24-17 with 7:19 left to play.
The offense for Lancaster would be able to chew up clock and yards on the next possession. They would go for a 4th and short but came up empty and turned over the ball to Clarence with under a minute to play and the entire field to go. The defense for the Legends came up big and stopped any drive.

There is a lot of it but of note is the story of why the teams did not play from 1933-1940. Baseball played between the schools led to a stoppage of play on the gridiron. It all changed when in 1941 the squads were in the same conference and had to play the other once again.
In 2016, the Depew Wildcats would visit LHS to play the Legends. This group of Lancaster football players were the first of what has been 5 straight Section Championships for the school on Forton Drive.

Lancaster has finished its play in Class AA last week against Clarence and finished 5-1. The loss to Bennett gives the Tigers the tie breaker as they also only have 1 loss. They play Niagara Falls this week and if they win will claim the top spot and earn a Bye week once the playoffs start. A loss will give the Legends that title and the Bye week. Below them are Clarence and OP who are looking for at least one home game to host if they can keep their positions. OP plays Williamsville North and Clarence plays Hutch Tech. Stay Tuned!
