Legends vs Wolverines
Saturday afternoon the Lancaster Legends will travel to Niagara Falls to play the Wolverines in the first Class AA Matchup for Lancaster this year.
Last Time Out
Lancaster vs Jamestown
Lancaster would host the Red Raiders of Class A on a gorgeous night on 1 Forton Drive.
Jamestown would get the ball 1st and faced a 4 and 1 quickly. The visitors opted to go for it on 4th instead of punting and attempted a pass. That pass play would end up hitting the ground and the Legends would get the ball on Jamestowns 33 yard line.
Lancaster would face a 3 and 5 on the the 28, the Legends threw a short pass to the left side of the field and get the ball to the Jamestown 13. After getting some help on a Red Raider facemask penalty, the Legends would throw the ball into the endzone for 6 points and the lead, extra point good, 7-0.
The Home team would get the ball back when the Lancaster defense held Jamestown and this time the Red Raiders punted on 4th down. Lancaster ball, 1st and 10 at their own 30.
The drive the Legends put together would see them get down inside the 10 yard line, 1st and goal. A proud Jamestown defense would halt the Legends drive and got some help with a penalty against Lancaster. On 4th down Lancaster would bring out the Field Goal unit for a 35 yard attempt. Snap, hold, kick, it was good, Legends up 10-0.
Jamestown on the next drive drove down the field and on a 3rd and 10 play from the Lancaster 24 yard line, throw a TD pass. Extra point was good, 10-7 Lancaster up with 10:47 left in the 2nd quarter.
The quarter would end with both teams getting the ball but unable to score on any possession.
Their would be no score until with 5:29 left in the 3rd quarter the Legends would run for 53 yards and earn 6 points, extra point was no good, 16-7 Legends.
Jamestown did not throw in the towel but came out and moved the ball inside the Lancaster 5 yard line. On 3rd down, the Red Raiders would fumble the ball with Lancaster jumping on it at their own 12 yard line.
The very first play of the Lancaster drive, the ball ended up in the endzone with the Legends jumping on it, safety, 16-9 Lancaster having to kick the ball back to Jamestown.
Jamestown would move the ball and get in the shadow of the goalline once again but the Legends defense would hold and push back the Red Raiders attempts. On 4th down and goal from the 6 yard line, a pass would go over the head of the Jamestown receiver, ball back to the home team, 2:27 left.
The Offense would only have the ball for 27 seconds but used up the Jamestown timeouts before punting back to the Red Raiders.
That last drive would end on a sack on 4th down for the visiting team, Lancaster brought the ball back out and would knee the ball to end the game.
Lancaster-Niagara Falls History
The Legends and Wolverines started to face each other back in 1921 and 1922. Both games were won by NF and both by shut out 27-0 in ‘21 and 37-0 in ‘22. The squads took a short break in playing until 1975 when there would be 2 more games played.
This time the teams would split with the Wolverines taking it in ‘75, 29-8 and Lancaster earning their first victory in ‘76, 12-6. There would be another lull in play until 1999. Since that year the teams have played each other 14 times with Lancaster having the edge in those games, 13-1.
Class AA
In other games this weekend, Orchard Park plays Jamestown in OP on Friday night. Hutch Tech will be facing the McKinley Bulldogs. Bennett will welcome the Clarence Red Devils after having played in Erie, PA last weekend to play the McDowell Trojans in one exciting game that ended up in OT.
Bennett vs. McDowell
Bennett would come out running but would throw a long pass to score their first TD. McDowell came out with their possession and move right down the field and score with a QB run up the middle, 8-7 Bennett up.
The 1st Quarter would end with Bennett having the ball on their own 26 yard line and looking at a 3rd and 14. The Tigers would throw the ball along the right side of the field and hit the receiver in stride and run it into the endzone, Bennett up 14-7.
McDowell would get 2 FG’s before the half, 14-13 Bennett up.
There would be no scoring until late in the 3rd when the Tigers would go up the middle for 1 yard and a TD. They would attempt a 2 point conversion and convert, 22-13 Bennett extends the lead.
The Trojans would get back on the board early in the 4th with a short pass, 22-20 Bennett up.
Bennett would not be able to move the ball and turned it back to McDowell. The Trojans would get deep inside the Tigers end and with just over 4 minutes left in the game, score a TD. The 2 point conversion would be converted by the Trojans and tie the game up at 28.
The 4th quarter would end and the game would go to Overtime.
Overtime had the ball at the 10 yard line with each team having a shot at the ball.
McDowell would get the ball first and score on 3rd down and short, 2 point conversion no good, 34-28. Bennett would get the ball and have their chance but were unable to move it close to the endzone. On 4th down, an attempted pass would not get out of the QB’s hand, ballgame over.
