Legends vs Red Raiders
Legends vs Red Raiders
Friday Night the Lancaster Legends football team will be back on Foyle-Kling Field and will face the Jamestown Red Raiders. This is a non-league game as Jamestown is in Class A this season. Lancaster is in Class AA along with Bennett, Hutch Tech, Niagara Falls and Orchard Park.
Last Time Out
Lancaster Legends
The last time we saw the Legends they were in Orchard Park, NY at Highmark Stadium. They were playing for the Section VI Class AA Championship against the Bennett Tigers on a snow and ice covered field.
On the opening drive of the game the Lancaster offense held the ball for 4:50 and grabbed the lead on a FG, 3-0.
Bennett would get the ball and drive down the field and get themselves a 1st and goal. The boys from Lancaster would hold back the Tigers after what looked like a TD for Bennett turned into a penalty and would bring it back. Lancaster would get the ball at their own 30 yard line after the defense would get a sack on 4th and goal.
The Legends offense got back on the field and moved the ball 40 yards to Bennetts 30 yard line but the drive would stall and forced to punt.
Bennett did not waste anytime with the ball as they ran a sweep around the left side and scored a TD. The Tigers went for 2 points but were stopped on a run up the middle, Bennett up 6-3.
The teams would go to the half to warm up and get ready for the 3rd Quarter. Bennett received the kickoff and were driving into the Lancaster end. They were running down the field when at the 27 yard line Lancaster stripped the ball from the Tiger Runningback and recovered the fumble.
The first play on that next drive a run up the middle would get to mid field and a Legends 1st down. The offense would bring the ball all the way down to inside the 5 yard line with a 1st and goal. The Tiger defense would hold on 1st and 2nd down forcing the Legends to a 3rd and goal situation. The play would result in a fumble with Bennett recovering the ball at their 4 yard line.
That next drive the Tigers would get out to their own 23 yard line but were forced to punt the ball. That punt was a short one with Lancaster starting at the Bennett 34.
Lancaster moved the ball to inside the 5 yard line and eventually over the goal line and the lead 10-6, 2:13 left in the 3rd Q.
Bennett did not sit back on that next drive and early in the 4th Q, move ahead 14-10.
Lancaster came back out and drove the field and would get within the shadow of the goal line but fell just short of taking back the lead.
Jamestown Red Raiders
The last time Jamestown was on the field it would be at Cicero-North Syracuse High School in Syracuse, NY in the Class A State Semifinal against Christian Brothers Academy. The game would also be on a snow and ice covered field with snow falling during the game. CBA jumped out first in this one on a short run but Jamestown answered right back but were unable to convert the 2 point conversion, CBA up 8-6. Read more about Jamestown/CBA Semifinal.
Lancaster/Jamestown History
2019
Lancaster last played the Red Raiders at Strider Field in Jamestown, NY in 2019. It was the Semifinals of the Section VI Class AA playoffs that year.
Jamestown was the No. 1 seed in 2019 and Lancaster had a week before defeated Clarence Red Devils on Main Street and would have to go on the road to reach, the then named New Era Field. Lancaster would jump out in the 2nd Quarter to grab the lead and never relinquish it to earn a W on that night. More on the Lancaster-Jamestown 2019 Playoff Game.
Playoffs 1999
Coming into the Oct. 30th 1999 playoff game against the Jamestown Red Raiders, Lancaster had not won a game against them since 1989. Only 2 weeks prior to this game, Jamestown had won 28-3 over Lancaster. The Red Raiders would travel to Foyle-Kling Field that night for the 1st round of the Section VI Playoffs.
Jamestown was up late in the game until with 39 seconds left in the 4th Quarter, Ty Godinho went around the right side of the line and ran 64 yards for a TD and the lead. Read More About the 1999 Lancaster/Jamestown Playoff Game.
